Excursion of MOYO members and friends to Lake Oberberger
On the morning of June 13th, the MOYO board invited members and friends of the association to an excursion to Lake Obernberg near the Brenner Pass, enjoying the sweltering summer temperatures. The group was accompanied by Dr. Klaus Schallhart, biologist and scientific coordinator of the alpine research facilities at the University of Innsbruck.
During a hike around the lake, the participants learned some interesting facts and scientific research findings: Lake Obernberg is one of the largest lakes in the North Tyrolean Central Alps. Its water level fluctuates considerably, by up to seven meters, with the lowest level in winter and the highest during the snowmelt in late spring. The lake actually consists of two parts separated by a prehistoric landslide – which occurred within minutes – from the Obernberg Tribulaun mountain. These two parts are only connected when the water level is high. Fresh water is supplied by the Obernberg Seebach stream, but primarily by underground springs.
Of course, fun and camaraderie were also an important part of the outing. So, we enjoyed a leisurely lunch at the Vinaders Inn. Many thanks to everyone who participated, and to Dr. Klaus Schallhart for the wonderful tour!
