Welcome and introductory words by Barbara Messner, President of the MOYO association.

Sophie Elizabeth Kibuywa has dedicated herself to the fight against injustice and oppression and almost had to pay for this commitment with her life. Today, the activist from Kenya is a leading member of the global rural people’s movement FIMARC as well as the founder of the aid organisation DESECE (https://desece.co.ke/). With its programmes for peace, sustainability and justice, this NGO has reached more than 1 million people in the densely populated north-east of Kenya in the past 10 years and brought about change.

In her lecture, the trained social worker reports on her personal path to becoming an activist and fighter for the rights of women, children and small farmers and gives insights into the aid organisation DESECE, which she founded. The project, which currently employs 22 people, has a model farm with an adjoining training centre where young people learn about sustainable agriculture. DESECE also cares for women, children, AIDS patients and refugees. The services offered range from protection against sexual abuse and violence to setting up a business and thus securing the livelihood of women with micro-credits to legal support for small farmers against land grabbing.

After the lecture, there will be time for questions and discussion.
